Baptism at Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Parish – Rotorua
“Loved by God, Called by Name.”
Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of faith. It is a joyful moment when we welcome a new member into our parish family and into the life of Christ and His Church.
Through the waters of Baptism, we are cleansed, reborn, and called to live as children of God.
At Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Parish, we see Baptism not only as a sacred celebration but also as a time of renewal for the whole family. It reminds us that we all share one faith, one hope, and one loving God who calls each of us by name.
🌿 Preparing for Baptism
Parents and godparents are invited to attend a Baptism Preparation Session held on the first Thursday of each month if they are baptising their first child.
This session helps parents and godparents deepen their understanding of this beautiful sacrament and their role in nurturing their child’s faith. It is also a time to meet other families beginning the same journey of faith.
✨ Special Preparation for Children Over 8 Years Old
We offer a special preparation programme once a year for children aged 8 and above who wish to be baptised.
Before joining the programme, families are encouraged to:
• Begin attending Sunday Mass regularly.
• Speak with the parish priest to express their interest.
• Take time to connect with the parish community and grow in understanding of the Catholic way of life.
Once you and your family feel at home in the faith community, and the next preparation programme is announced, you will be invited to join.
💧 Celebrating the Sacrament
Baptisms are usually celebrated during or after the weekend Mass, allowing the whole parish to witness and welcome the newly baptised.
Special arrangements can also be made for other times, depending on family circumstances.
🙏 For Parents and Families
When you bring your child for Baptism, you are saying “yes” to raising them in the light of Christ.
Things to bring: Candle and White Stole
We are here to accompany you — to support, guide, and pray with you as your family grows in faith.
As Saint Mary MacKillop reminds us:
“We must teach more by example than by word.”
