“Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend their spirit.”
A Catholic funeral expresses our hope in the Resurrection and offers family, friends, and the faith community an opportunity to pray for the soul of the deceased and entrust them to God’s mercy.
At Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Parish, we are here to walk with you in this time of loss — helping you plan a meaningful, faith-filled farewell that reflects your loved one’s life and trust in God.
It is an ancient Christian tradition to keep vigil on the eve of major feasts — and this tradition extends to funerals.
The Vigil Service is usually held on the evening before the funeral, in the church or sometimes in the family home.
It is a time to gather, pray, share memories, and draw strength from Christ’s presence.
• Opening song and prayers
• Liturgy of the Word
• Intercessions and concluding rite
• Opportunity for sharing memories, tributes, or symbols
• The Rosary (or part of it) may also be included
The Funeral Mass includes:
• Reception of the body
• Liturgy of the Word
• Liturgy of the Eucharist
• Final Commendation and Farewell
At the beginning of the Mass, the priest sprinkles the casket with holy water, recalling the person’s Baptism.
During the Final Commendation, the community entrusts their loved one to God’s care. The casket is honoured with incense — a sign of reverence and a reminder that the person was a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Music, readings, and prayers express our belief in God’s mercy and the hope of eternal life.
When families prefer a simpler liturgy, a Funeral Service without a Mass may be celebrated.
This includes readings from Scripture, prayers, music, and a final commendation, but no Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Holy water and incense are used as signs of Baptism and prayer rising to God.
The Committal is the Church’s final act of care for the body of the deceased, held at the graveside, tomb, or crematorium.
It includes short prayers, Scripture, and the act of committal.
Though this moment of separation is difficult, the Church stands beside the family, offering comfort and the promise of resurrection.
“The grave is not a place of despair, but of rest and peace, awaiting the resurrection.”
Can I have a Catholic funeral if I or my family are not practising Catholics?
Yes. The parish accompanies all who seek the Church’s prayer at the time of death. Our priest or pastoral team will help you plan the service, choose readings and music, and guide you through each step.
Can we have a funeral without a full Mass?
Yes. A funeral liturgy without Mass may be celebrated with Scripture, prayer, and song.
Can Catholics be cremated?
Yes. While burial remains the traditional practice, cremation is permitted when chosen for reasons consistent with Christian faith. The ashes should be laid to rest in a sacred place.
How can we include friends and family who are not Catholic?
Let the priest know. He can explain the parts of the service and make everyone feel welcome and included.
